Deep, Focused Therapy to Unlock Lasting Change
Transform Your Healing Journey with EMDR Intensives.
EMDR Intensives: The What and Why
An EMDR Intensive is a focused block of therapy time, anywhere from two hours to several days, designed to help you process and resolve specific issues more quickly than in weekly sessions. Instead of working through trauma or distressing memories in small pieces week by week, an intensive gives you the space to stay with the work, complete full EMDR phases, and leave with a clear sense of closure and relief. People choose intensives when they want to make deeper progress in a shorter amount of time, particularly when they feel stuck in regular therapy. When the schedule does not accommodate weekly treatment. When they are ready for focused trauma work and have support in place afterward

Single-incident trauma (accidents, losses, medical events)
Work, relationship, or attachment injuries
Anxiety, grief, or chronic stress that feels “stuck”
Performance blocks or self-limiting beliefs
Intensives can also help people who’ve made progress in therapy but want to clear what’s left.

Everyone begins with a readiness screening and brief consultation.
We look at things like grounding skills, emotional stability, and post-session support. If those pieces aren’t solid yet, we start with short stabilization sessions first to help you prepare. -
That’s okay. The screening and consult are designed to help us find what’s safest and most effective for you. If we decide intensive work isn’t appropriate right now, we’ll outline a short stabilization plan and revisit when you’re ready.
-
During the intensive, you’ll have direct contact with me for the hours we’ve scheduled together. If your intensive spans multiple days, we’ll build in structured breaks and a brief check-in plan so you know exactly when we’ll reconnect.
Outside of those hours, communication is limited to logistical or scheduling needs, not therapy. This helps your nervous system integrate and prevents overwhelm. If additional support feels needed between sessions, we’ll identify safe grounding tools and resources ahead of time.
-
Intensives at BIB are not billed directly to insurance. Some plans may reimburse a portion of the fee as out-of-network therapy, but this varies by provider. A superbill can be provided upon request for you to submit to your insurance. Payment is required in full before the first session, and a Good Faith Estimate will be provided in advance.
-
Yes. If you’re located in a state where I’m licensed and your environment allows privacy and safety. We’ll confirm that during your consult.
-
After you apply and complete your readiness questionnaire, we’ll schedule a 15-minute consult.
During that call, we’ll confirm timing, goals, and your support plan. You’ll receive a Good Faith Estimate and deposit instructions before confirming your date. -
Each session includes preparation, EMDR processing, grounding, and integration.
We pace carefully — with time for breaks, hydration, and reflection — so the experience feels steady, not overwhelming. -
You’ll leave with a clear sense of completion and follow-up suggestions.
Many clients return to their primary therapist or schedule a short integration session to consolidate gains and monitor how things settle over the following days or weeks. -
Study Highlights
Auren et al. (2022)
An intensive trauma program combining EMDR, exposure, and movement therapy led to over half of the participants no longer meeting criteria for PTSD. Clients also reported significant decreases in depression and anxiety, and no treatment dropouts.
European Journal of Psychotraumatology (NCBI)Bongaerts, van Minnen & de Jongh (2017)
Explored EMDR delivered intensively to people with complex PTSD, without long stabilization periods. The approach was safe, tolerable, and practical, with substantial symptom reductions and no adverse events.
Journal of EMDR Practice and Research (Springer)van Woudenberg et al. (2018)
An intensive EMDR and exposure program showed clinically meaningful improvement in 80% of participants, and over half no longer met PTSD criteria afterward. Dropout rate: under 3%.

EMDR Is Not Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis typically induces a state of deep relaxation, similar to a trance. EMDR does not. Instead, you stay fully awake and grounded while engaging both the distressing memory and a positive belief you’re working to strengthen.
You’re not “under” or detached, you’re aware, connected, and in control the entire time.EMDR Is Not Traditional Exposure Therapy
Exposure therapy relies on prolonged re-exposure to trauma memories, often producing extended high anxiety. EMDR employs short, focused sets of bilateral stimulation and memory recall, resulting in rapid reductions in distress within the same session.
It’s trauma-focused, but designed to minimize re-traumatization and support nervous system regulation.EMDR Is Not a Placebo
Dozens of controlled studies have found EMDR equal or superior to other validated trauma therapies:More effective than active listening, relaxation training, or generic outpatient care
Comparable in outcomes to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for PTSD
Endorsed by the World Health Organization, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and American Psychological Association as an evidence-based treatment for trauma
